By 2010, nearly one in three workers in the United States will be over the age of 50…
As the relative proportion of younger workers declines, attracting and retaining experienced and reliable workers must become a core business strategy for all employers. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with AARP, is holding a one-day workshop for small and medium-sized employers to provide a look into the future at the changing 50+ workforce dynamics, and lead the participants to develop and implement effective hiring strategies and new retention methods in order to remain competitive in the 21st century. An essential component of the workshop is the six-month period of support from the U.S. Chamber after the event has concluded. The U.S. Chamber has committed to providing networking and technical assistance to help ensure the successful implementation of every participant’s plan of action. Tucson will hold this one-day workshop on May 11. For more information, or to register for this event, please contact Paula Stuht at 792-2250 ext. 134.

BEP Committee tours San Miguel High School… The Business Education Partnership Committee recently visited San Miguel High School, which is Tucson’s newest Catholic high school, located near Valencia and I-19. This state-of-the-art school opened in 2004, and currently has only freshmen and sophomores enrolled in the school. There is an enrollment limit of 400 students, and all students work five days per month in businesses throughout Tucson as a way to learn business skills. The school works successfully with low-income minority students on the improvement of study habits, soft skills and grades for college.
