With the deadline to file candidacy papers for state and local offices passed, the list of local candidates for state offices has been revealed.
Several races show no opposition while others are logjammed. Perhaps the biggest shakeouts may come in U.S. Congressional District 1 and Arizona Legislative District 29 In District 1, four Democrats and five Republicans are vying for the seat, and Arizona District 29 has seven Dems and two GOP candidates running for the two State House seats.
The most visible race to this point is in U.S. Congressional District 8, where incumbent Democrat Gabrielle Giffords is facing current State Senate President, Republican Tim Bee. In District 7, Democratic incumbent has competition from a pair of Republicans.
In the State Senate races, Democrats Paula Aboud (Dist. 28) and Linda Lopez (Dist. 29) are running unopposed, while on the House side, District 28 will be represented by two Democrats, Steve Farley and David Bradley, who are unopposed for those two seats.
On the Pima County Board of Supervisors, Republican Ray Carroll (Dist. 4) and Democratic Chairman Richard Elias (Dist. 5) are unopposed in their races for re-election, while Republican Ann Day (Dist. 1) and Democrat Ramon Valadez (Dist. 2) will have competition from within their party. Democrat Sharon Bronson (Dist. 3) will have a Democrat and a Republican with whom to contend.
In other county offices, Democrat F. Ann Rodriguez is unopposed in the recorder’s race, as is Republican Elizabeth Ford for treasuser and Democrat Bill Staples for assessor and Republican Linda Arzoumanian for superintendent of schools. Barbara LaWall has two rivals in her bid for re-election as county attorney, and Democratic Sheriff Clarene Dupnik will face a Republican challenger.
