The MarketWatch Study—Why is Tucson ranked so low?
There has been much written about a recent article in the Wall Street Journal’s Market Watch segment in which Tucson ranked in the bottom 10 cities out of 101 in “best places to do business”.  My first reaction, like many others, was of disbelief, followed quickly by disappointment.  Our business community has many hurdles to overcome—there is no question about that—but being ranked at the bottom is hard to understand.

Average ACCRA cost of living results for 2009
This report represents the third edition of a new format for the ACCRA Cost of Living Index.  Beginning with the fourth quarter of 2007, C2ER publishes an unweighted average of data accumulated from the three pricing periods during the previous year. 2010 State of the City a huge success
Mayor Bob Walkup delivered an insightful, hard hitting State of the City Address to a crowd of 700 attendees on Friday, January 29th at the Tucson Convention Center.  He talked about making needed reforms to the Land Use Code, annexing unincorporated areas in the valley, rewriting the City Charter,and finding ways to make our community more business friendly.  Read more and view pictures . . .

2010 TCCE Scholarship Applications available now
The Tucson Center for Cultural Enrichment (TCCE), the Tucson Chamber’s 501©3 entity, is pleased to announce it scholarship program for 2010. The Center will be offering a total of six $2000 scholarships to Pima County high school seniors attending Pima Community College or UA in the fall of 2010. Applications and more information are available online. The application deadline is Friday, March 19th and the award announcement will be April 16th. A judging panel will be assembled from members of the Chamber’s Education committee. This program is sponsored in part by Institute for Better Education, Blue Cross Blue Shield and Citi. Good Morning Tucson in January
January's Good Morning Tucson provided the attendees an indepth insight into the economics of the mining industry in this state. Rod Pace, President of Rosemont Copper, shared important information on the potential impacts of the Rosemont Copper mine with the group, from anticipated water usage, to expected employment levels, and culminated his talk with a description of the long term plans for restoration of the area. His remarks were well received by the crowd of over 110 people,and, after his talk, he provided straight forward answers to the attendees' various questions. See pictures of the event. . .

Power Networking Lunch
What a great start to 2010! Over 100 people attended the first Power Networking Luncheon of the year at Desert Diamond Casino and Hotel on Nogales Hwy. The venue was great and the food was fabulous! Guests arrived at 11 am sharp and started networking immediately at the buffet line, at the booths, and at their tables. Once the ‘official’ program began, everyone had the opportunity to move to different tables to make new contacts.  Special thanks to our sponsors Desert Diamond Casino and Hotel and American Family Insurance, our POWER TOOL sponsor.
