The Southern Arizona Leadership Council in conjunction with the Tucson Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, the University of Arizona, Tucson Regional Economic Opportunities, and other interested groups for the metropolitan area have all come together to create a clear vision for Tucson’s future.

Because this effort requires the best possible representation of our community to share insight and knowledge, a town hall was held on May 6th – 9th for the Tucson Region.   The process, started here, is continuing as the Town Hall Advisory Committee strives to bring the community together to find solutions for the issues that have been uncovered.

If you haven’t done so already, please consider participation in this worthwhile venture.  This visioning process will be the starting point for our community to build a road map with which we can reach our preferred future.   The Town Hall Process identified twelve major areas of concern for our community.

There are:

  • Regional Attributes
  • Arts, Culture and Recreation
  • The Role of Downtown Tucson in the Region
  • Planning and Land-Use Guidelines
  • Water Use, Reuse, and Management
  • Transportation Planning
  • A High Wage, Knowledge-Based Economy
  • Increasing Skilled Workers for High-Wage Jobs
  • Accessibility and Quality Healthcare
  • A culture of Literacy
  • Tucson Region’s Education Promise to Its Children
  • Postsecondary Education

Ongoing surveys are posted on the Town Hall website giving everyone an opportunity to respond to them. Two survey areas have already been completed: “Community Values” and “Downtown Tucson”.  The findings plus the original Town Hall document will set the stage for upcoming meetings in which interested groups or individuals can come together and begin to structure solutions and directions for Tucson’s future.

The Chamber of Commerce has asked to help coordinate two of the remaining issues.  Those are “Literacy” and “Workforce”.  We have partnered with the Community Foundation of Southern Arizona to begin work on our Literacy focus and the survey has been posted on the website for comment.

We have also partnered with the Workforce Investment Board (WIB) to begin addressing Workforce Issues.  We’ll keep you posted as things progress.  In the meantime, check out the Town Hall Website and take  a survey.
