Chamber, PCC and Job Path Join Forces

Chamber staff met with Job Path and Pima Community College representatives to finalize plans for a certification and Associates Degree program for Office Administrators and Office Managers. Based on the ever-increasing demand for qualified office personnel, the Chamber and Job Path have been working with PCC staff to craft a curriculum that, upon completion, will provide graduates with a broad range of skills that are critical for office managers/administrators. The Chamber is working to unite 8-10 current office managers from various businesses for a day-long focus group at PCC to ensure that the curriculum covers the core competencies necessary for a professional administrator/office manager. This program will be a perfect fit for JTED graduates that wish to continue their education and become even more proficient in their chosen field of employment.

Concerned Groups Unite for Positive Immigration Initiative

Arizona Chambers of Commerce, Businesses, Contractors, and others have united to spearhead an initiative for a state-based immigration policy. Supporters believe that pro-active efforts should be made toward sound immigration enforcement that promotes business and the economy while securing our borders. The public is encouraged to Take Action Now! by contacting their elected officials to voice their concerns about this issue. Proponents of this initiative have already begun to spread the word. Town of Oro Valley General Election

Ballots for the Town of Oro Valley General Election were mailed to Oro Valley residents who are registered voters in April. Incumbents Terry Parish and Barry Gillaspie are in a runoff for the remaining Council seat. The voter registration deadline for this election was April 21, 2008. All ballots must be returned no later than Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 7:00pm. Click here for more information.

Upward Bound Program

Pima Community College has established an Upward Bound Pre-College Program that supports and encourages low-income and first-generation high school students to enter college through one-on-one advisors/mentoring, career exploration, guest speakers and field trips. Upward Bound participants take enrichment classes in literature, writing, math and science. The Chamber will support this program by advising our members of its existence and urging them to participate.

CANAMEX Task Force

Chamber staff attended the Governor’s CANAMEX Task Force meeting in Phoenix on May 1st. The task force approved the use of up to $200,000 in CyberPort funds to assess the feasibility of developing a major multi-modal logistics center to facilitate trade with the planned Punto Colonet Port on the Baja. The task force also supported the $174 million full federal funding of the reconstruction of the Mariposa Port of Entry.

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Tucson Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce is once again inviting the general public in the greater Tucson and southern Arizona area to join it on a weeklong trip to China, beginning in late October.
The trip costs $1,599 per person with double occupancy in a four- or five-star accommodation, and the cost includes round-trip airfare from Los Angeles, meals, tickets to tourist attractions and English-speaking tour guides with deluxe tour buses.
Those interested in the trip are invited to attend an orientation Thursday, May 8, at 5:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Hotel and Suites at 5151 East Grant Road.

New Employee Verification Act

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords invited Tucson Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce Governmental Affairs staff to participate in a video teleconference from Washington, DC on the New Employee Verification Act. On April 30, 2008, the House Ways and Means Committee will be hearing testimony about this legislation. Jack Camper, Chamber president, has been invited to address the Committee about the effect this legislation will have on preempting Arizona’s Employer Sanctions Law.

State of the District

District 8 Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords addressed 400 guests at the Hilton El Conquistador Hotel. For many years, the Tucson Chamber has been hosting this yearly State of the District luncheon. Keeping Chamber members informed of what is happening on Capitol Hill is a vital part of the Chamber’s legislative involvement.
