Tucson's cost of living under national average
Three times a year, the Tucson Chamber participates in the acquisition of data for the national Cost of Living Index. The results of the most recent survey were published last month.

The cost of living index for the third quarter 2009 shows Tucson’s composite index as 98.5. This translates into a below average cost of living for a professional/managerial household, the national average is 100.0, when compared to the 315 urban areas that participated in the quarter’s survey. The Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale metro area reported a composite index of 96.3 while the Sierra Vista-Douglas area reported 97.2. The Manhattan, NY area was the highest at 214.7 and Martinsburg-Berkeley reported 85.9. Sixty items were priced on pre-determined dates that include housing, utilities, grocery items, transportation, health care, and miscellaneous goods and services.  Click here to read a brief article about  a few specific categories in this report.
